In 1873 King Ludwig II bought Herreninsel to built a castle which had to be a better copy of Palais Versailles. The project stopped because of a lack of money. Nevertheless it's a beautiful palace with lots of beautiful details.

Unfortunately one is not allowed to photograph the interior.

    an interesting page, Patrick ! Every century has its mad kings, and when I look at all these great castles of Ludwig, I wonder what the mad kings of today will be admired for in the far away future...
