  • The Netherlands is at its most dignified in The Hague, home of the royal family, seat of government and, hence, packed with ministries and embassies.
The most notable day in the city's calender is the third Tuesday in September, when the queen rides in the golden coach to the binnenhof to open parliament.

    Things To Do: Kinderdijk
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you fly over the Netherlands the first thing you notice is that everything is organized, the land, fields are divide in parallel parts.

On this picture you see the windmills from Kinderdijk. I don't think you ever see more windmills together then over here.

    Things To Do: Zaanse schans
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Zaanse Schans is a typical residential area along the river Zaan with green wooden houses and windmills dating from the 17th and the 18th century.
What makes the Zaanse Schans so special is that it is both a museum and a living and working area.

The area was named 'De Zaanse Schans' after an entrenchment which was erected in 1574 to hold back Spanish troops at the beginning of the Eighty Years War between the Netherlands and Spain. People work and live in the Zaanse Schans: they feel at home in the area and keep alive the glory which this industrial district saw in the golden age. Visiting the Zaanse Schans, you will see a situation characteristic of the landscape of that district until late in the nineteenth century. The dikes were probably built as early as the thirteenth century, the first villages were built along these at a later date. Until late in the last century these were typical 'dike-villages'.

    Things To Do: Amsterdam
  • Tip Rating:
  • Amsterdam is the economic and cultural hub of the country.
This city lies at the heart of an important industrial region and is, after Rotterdam, the country's most important port.
The streets themselves are lined with gems of dutch architecture. And from a boat at the many canals you have a super view at the tall gabled houses and graceful bridges.

    Things To Do: Breda
  • Tip Rating:
  • Netherlands - Big market Breda
  • Big market Breda
  • by MATIM
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • The history of Breda dates back to the early days of the 12th century. Gradually the fishing village developed into a small town surrouded by walls. It was a small market town in which the harbour had a very important role. Merchandise was shipped to Breda from the surroundings to be sold near the port.
In the 14th and 15th centuries, Breda grew into a real royal residence. In the 16th century, during the reign of Count Hendrik the thirth, Breda prospered. Under the leadership of the count, the city expanded considerably. After Breda had completed its fortifications, the town could develop into an important economic centre. Periods for over six times, first by the Spaniards, then by the State army and eventually recaptured by the French.
Last century, the city finally developed undisturbedly. In that manner Breda grew into its present shape.
Now, Breda is a medium sized town with a population of about 126.000
