I am Polish and love this country. This is not to say for everyone. I simply have fond memories from there, since I grew up there and will always feel sentimental about it. At some point (during the communist regime)years ago, I felt I had to leave there and explore the world. I found many places that are more beautiful - from aestetic point of view. However, like I said before I will always be drawn to Poland and cannot stay away for too long. Every year I come back and see how the country is changing - for better and for worse. No matter what though, Poland is an integral part of Europe and is catching up very quickly with the rest. It still has a long way to go to conform to world standards in many aspects, but the collosal progress it made cannot be denied.
After you see the big stuff, go to little places and enjoy hospitality of the locals. Not too many places and their people have gone through so much in history and look and feel this good.
Travellers from outside, please remember that although the country's political system has changed, mentality of many did not. No doubt, you will find yourself in situations that don't mesure up to Western standards.
It can be enjoyed if you are prepared for it. Many a time you will feel as if though you're watching a movie from a bygone era, and you know what? you're starring in it! And this is the "charm" of Eastern Europe I enjoy.
