The Deutsches Eck (German Corner) is the triangle shaped square at the confluence of the rivers Rhine and Moselle.
The name comes from the Knights of the Deutscher Orden (German Order) who founded here a settlement back in 1216.

St. Castor's Church is the oldest church in Koblenz, and pretty much one of the oldest I've seen, being founded in 836 by Louis the Pious. The present Romanesque building was completed in 1208, the Gothic vaulted roof dating from 1498.
Addiacent to the church there is a courtyard, with flowers and benches, from where you can admire the beautiful towers. In fact, the church has four towers, but the two pictured are bigger.
To the left of the church, going trough a stone archway you will find the Blumenhof - a quiet place leading to the Ludwig art Museum.
In front of the church of Saint Castor stands a fountain, erected by the French in 1812, with an inscription to commemorate Napoleon's invasion of Russia.

The impressive collosal equestrian statue of the emperor Wilhelm I of Germany is the main attraction of Deutsches Eck, as tourists can climb up to it to view the beautiful panorama of the two rivers.
The 61,5 tons and 14 meter high bronze statue was built in 1897, standing on a massive (23 meter high) piedestal. In fact, bombings in 1945 have destroyed the original, and a copy was uncovered in 1993.

Once up to the level of the statue, looking up will make you get eye contact with the big looking furious horse that seems to just step over you.

Tourists driving cars (their own or rented, as I did) should know that there are two roads, one on each bank of the Rhine river. But better choose left or right well before, because then you will very rarely have the chance to cross the river, as bridges are very few. I guess any side has the same beauty. I choose the right side (coming down from Koblenz to Mainz) because the main road is over here.
On the way, one can not stand not to pull off and take the pictures of the castles. Of course, the main attraction of the are the castles, Rhine Valley being somehow similar to Loire Valley in France.

The Loreley: The Loreley Rock

Going south on the majestic Rhein Valley, also called the Castle Route, at one point you will encounter the place where the Rhein downstream was squeezed into its narrowest and deepest point. Even in the 19th century, reefs and rapids made it extremely dangerous for ships and rafts to pass this point, so a tree bells warning told the crew it was time to pray. The legend says that here, on the top of the Loreley rock a blonde siren - Loreley lures sailors to their doom with her singing and enigmatic beauty. The legend continues when a son of a Count was sunk here, and his father sent troups to kill to witch on the peak. Then Loreley calls her father, the mighty Rhein river, and the waves went up, get her downstream and she was never seen since.
There is a footpath up to the top of the rock from the car park at the foot of the Loreley. A magnificent view is promised from up the peak.

About half the distance from Koblenz to Mainz, on the right side (the side that I drove), there is the little town of Oberwesel and the 12th century Schonburg Castle.
The castle itself it's an good shape but it's not accesible. You can climb to it and tour the outdoor areas. There is though a restaurant inside one wing of the castle.

Oberwesel has the most complete and best preserved medieval town fortifications in the Middle Rhine area. The town itself is situated on the site of an old Celtic settlement (400 BC) and a Roman military service point. The city wall is the most complete still standing in the area, with its 18 towers.

Counts of Katzenelnbogen had built more than one castle, but this bares their name - Katzenelnbogen Castle, Katz for short, erecter on the other side of the Rhine in 1371. It was built on this place to made it possible to detect and give early warning of ships coming round the Loreley, thus defending the little town of Hausen.
Strong fortified walls conected the 40 meters high keep on both sides with the living quarters, the fivesides Palas, across the protective steep hillside. The thick outer walls of the Palas as well as a slightly lower triangular bastion in front of it additionally fortified the castle, which was very likely impregnable before the arrival of firearms.
