While in Austria, Salzburg is a must visit city after Vienna. From those interested in history you can find about Salzburg's past stories. Then, of course, Salzburg is very proud of it's son - the music genius Mozart. There are also a lot of highlight for travelers to see in Salzburg over at least a few days, like: Hohensalzburg Fortress, Mirabell Palace and Mirabell Gardens, Hellbrun Palace, Salzburg's Cathedral, FestivalHalls, Getreidegasse - the most beautiful shopping lane, Residenz - the former official apartements of the Salzburg prince archbishops, Mozart's residence, Mozart's birthplace, St. Sebastian's Church and more.
As in many other european cities, it is highly recommended to get the Salzburg Card which will give you 'all-in-one': free admissions to all the city's attraction, free use of public transport troughout the city, including fortress funicular and panorama boat, attractive discounts for cultural events and even discounts for varius tours and excursions (like the visit to the Alte Saline Bad Reichenhall salt mine).

My last trip to Salzburg was in August 2007, coming from Sankt Wolfgang am Wolfgangsee, and I found Salzburg too crowded for my taste :) really a crowd of tourist like a bull heard. So I guess it's better to avoif months like July and August when visiting Salzburg, and Festival Days (August).
