Trevi Fountain: Fontana di Trevi

  • I will start with Fontana di Trevi (1735), because it seems it is something magical with this place. Every time I turned around I found myself back to this place :) I think everybody knows the legend that is you throw a coin over your shoulder in the Trevi Fountain you will return to Rome. I guess 90% of the tourists, if not more, do that, so the fountain has to be 'cleaned' before the homeless people do. I can tell you I could stand hours just watching the Trevi Fountain. It is so beautiful, and the sound of water, and all that interests that it generates makes it one of the nicest view in the whole world. Useful tip: Watch your pockets!

    Colosseum: The Colosseum

  • The Colosseum - Il Colosseo in Italian - is another landmark of the romans. They were mandatory back in the ancient times (60-100 A.D.) because people needed entertainment and because there were no television or internet, it had to be gladiators killing animals. And that is exactly what I don't like about The Colosseum, but it is a must to visit while in Rome. It is a very big structure, well built. It used to have a retractable ceiling, made of fabric, to protect against rain. Its real name is "Flavian Amphitheatre" and it could contain more than 50,000 spectators. Construction began in 72 AD during emperor Vespasian and it was finished in 80 AD under his son Titus. Useful tip: To avoid lines, buy the ticket at the entrance of the Roman Forums (some 200 meters away) - that ticket is valid both for Roman Forums and The Colosseum)

Campidoglio/Capitoline Hill: Il Campidoglio / The Capitol

  • The Capitol, once sacred to the Romans and the destination of the triumphal processions of victorious generals, is today the headquarters of the Mayor and the Municipality of Rome. Piazza del Campidoglio was masterful designed by Michelangelo for Pope Paul III. Michelangelo also designed the two palaces on the opposite sides of the square, creating a divergence which widens a perspective to the Palazzo Senatorio.

Piazza Venezia - Vittoriano: Vittorio Emanuele II Monument

  • Also called "Vittoriano", this massive white building could be considered a center point of Rome (at least I see it like this). In front of it there is Piazza Venezia, on the right side there is the Capitol Hill with Santa Maria in Aracoeli hidden behind, in the left side there is the Trajan's Forum, and behind Vittoriano there are the great Roman Forums, leasing to the Colloseum. This monumental building - seems to me it outgrowth any other building in Rome by its massivity - took some very long time to finish, started in 1885 was inaugurated only in 1911. Only the equestrian statue (see additional pictures) of the king (Vittorio Emanuele II) took the Venetian sculptor 20 years (!) to make.

Piazza del Popolo: Piazza del Popolo

  • Piazza del Popole was the first place that I see in Rome. This piazza starts with a wonderful gate (see additional pictures). Piazza del Popolo is very big and generally not crowded. From here starts the famous Via Veneto (see additional pictures), which goes straight south to Piazza Venezia and Vittoriano. Via Veneto is a shopping paradise. It was my first walk-trough Rome. In the center of Piazza del Popolo there is another (of the hundreds in Rome) obelisk, which was brought to Roma by Emperor Augustus in the 15th century. I considered Piazza del Popolo a good starting point in visiting Rome. Maybe you will start your visit here too :)

Piazza del Popolo: Twin churches in Piazza del Poppolo

  • The design of the former entry to the city of Rome, now the shopping street Via del Corso, is enhanced by the two twins churches on each side of the beginning of this street. These are Santa Maria dei Miracoli (St.Mary of Miracles) and Santa Maria di Montesanto (St.Mary of the saint mount). While Santa Maria dei Miracoli was finished in 1597, its twin sister Santa Maria di Montesanto was not finished until 1675.

    Castel Sant'Angelo: Castel Sant'Angelo

  • Built by the Emperor Adrianus in 130 A.D. to be his imperial tomb, Saint Angelo is a round shaped castle on the bank of the Tiber River. At the top, the angel statue that probably gives out its name. It is fun to walk around the castle or on the walls. No fancy rooms, only stones. Saint Angelo is though an important landmark of Rome.
Hadrianeum, as initially called, was begun in 123 A.D. and held the Imperial remains until 217 A.D. The original design is not known, but from the description of Procopius, a 6th century Byzantine historian. The structure was heavily modified under Aurelian (275 A.D.) and under Honorius (403 A.D.) and it was a bastion against the barbarian invasion in 410 A.D. The transformation into a castle occurred in the 10th century, and the name of Sant'Angelo dates to the 12th century.

  • This bridge was built at the same time with Sant'Angelo mausoleum, in 130 A.D., by the Emperor Hadrian. It was initially called Ponte Elio. The rows of angels were sculpted by the followers of Bernini.

  • The Pantheon is the only monument from the classical times (B.C.) that remained intact. Some of Italy's most famous kings and artists (like Raphael) are buried here. The interior is round, measuring 43,4 meters in width as well in height. It was a marvelous structure to built such an enormous roof at that times. The cupola has an opening of 9 meters, called The Oculus. Trough this prayers were supposed to raise more easily to the heavens.

Piazza di Spagna - Spanish Steps: Spanish Steps

  • In fact called "Scalinata di Trinita dei Monti" (1722) are the wide steps leading to one of the thousands of churches in Rome - Trinita dei Monti. This is a place where, supposedly, citizens of modern age Rome used to rest and have a (long) chat. Seems to me that these days if you count the people on the steps you will find more tourists than actual residents of Rome :) Anyway, this is also a must do: stay a while on the steps, close your eyes and stare into the sun, then open eyes and look at the crowds of tourists.
