City Island, in the posh part of the (upper) Bronx, accessible via causeway. A themed yacht/fishing centre which hardly seems part of the city at all. I went there by car (take the Bruckner Expressway through the Bronx and keep going), but you can go by public transport by taking subway train #6 to Pelham Park Bay (the last stop), then city bus #29...<p>
Brighton Beach, Brooklyn

Signs in Russian, films and videos in Russian, great Russian food (if you like it, which I do), or kosher food (knishes, bagels)...<img src=http://www.galanter.net/MyCities/NewYork/Brighton/Brighton%203.jpg>..even that apparent impossibility in the USA, restaurants with real atmosphere but rotten service! <p>

You can access Brighton Beach from Manhattan by car and city bus or, easier, by taking the subway, which at Brighton Beach is an 'El' (elevated track): Train D or (if my memory serves) either 61 or 62. Worth a visit, anyway. A few well known Jewish comedians and media people generally have come from this neighbourhood: Paul Simon, Jerry Seinfeld..<p>

The Nikolai Roerich Museum (319 West 107th Street). If you like Roerich's metaphysical paintings, this is a must, sought out by fans worldwide. Housed in an old brownstone, this is one of the best collections of his work in the world.<p>
