Bars in Alexandria: Nightlife is not that...

  • Nightlife is not that interesting in Alex

Bellydancing has been all but wiped out by Islamic fanaticism, there are few expats and tourists who might sustain more liveliness and many places make it hard or impossible for you to get even an Egyptian beer.

A few ideas: the Spitfire Bar (address near Ramla..in most guide books) which is OK for a drink with a group but would be boring to go to alone; the ''Portuguese Club', members only but many foreigners in Alex do belong; the large opulent cafes round or very close to Ramla tram terminus, which do have an authentic whiff of Graham Greene, Lawrence Durrell and the golden International Period of the city (1860-1940), when Alex had 300,000 Alexandrian 'Greeks' and many British and French officials, military people etc to leaven the mix.

Bars in Alexandria: The Spitfire Bar, for drinks...

  • The Spitfire Bar, for drinks with friends (it would not be much fun alone)

For a city of several millions, Alexandria is an extraordinarily hard place in which to get a drink!

Apart from the Spitfire Bar and the Portuguese Club' (which also goes by the names of the 'Portuguese General Association' club and 'Carlos' Bar'), there is, apparently, a well known bar on Hurriya (one of the main avenues), called 'Bar Havana', which however, is unmarked by any sign. No doubt the main guidebooks would have the address.

Directions: The Spitfire Bar is central. Most guidebooks will have the address. It's near Ramla, about three or four minutes walk from there or the Cecil and the main square.
