Try the smaller places in the streets West off Ramla (where the trams terminate) and, for an authentic 1930's experience, the nearby Brazilian Coffee Stores (address in most guidebooks). No seats or tables, just drink standing up at the counter-- and a strange Soviet method of buying bags of coffee: you select, get a chit, go to cashier and pay, then return (three or four feet) to the other chap who gives you your coffee. Also try a couple of the bars known to people who lived in Alex in the International Period of the 1930's, people like Lawrence Durrell (who wrote the 'Alexandria Quartet'). If you are with friends, try the Spitfire Bar. And if you find a member, the 'Portuguese Club'

Try the small places in the streets west of Ramla: Arab specialties...I prefer savoury, like falafel (taamiya), but if you like sweets, try Om Ali ('Ali's Mother'), the quintessential Egyptian dessert item.

Favorite Dish: Taamiya. And, of course, 'ahwa mazboot', slightly sweet Turkish coffee.
