Getting TO/AROUND: Fukuoka Airport is located just a fifteen to twenty-five minute drive from the
Hakata Station and Tenjin downtown areas. Fukuoka Airport is one of the most conveniently located international airports in
Japan. The subway connects to the Aiport for 200 yen from Hakata.

Fukuoka has an international airport which was recently upgraded. It is connected to the domestic terminal by free bus. The easiest way to get to the domestic terminal from Hakata train station is by subway but there is also a Nishitetsu bus.
Hakata (the center of Fukuoka) is the end of the Shinkansen line which connects north with Osaka and Tokyo etc.

Avoid taxis like the plague.... VERY EXPENSIVE!!
I would take a bus or use the subway (starts at 200yen a trip). Recently Nishitetsu bus started a 100yen service around the center of Fukuoka. This will get you from Hakata to Canal City- a great shopping mall.

Getting TO/AROUND: Fukuoka City is the last stop on the JR Shinkansen Line. Within Kyushu you can travel only between Kokura (Kitakyushu City) and Hakata (Fukuoka City) on the Shinkansen. It is fast but costs 7,000 yen return!). There are really good Limited Express Trains and local trains running from Hakata which is the main station in Fukuoka.

In Kyushu you should pay 500 Yen for a 'Nice Going Card' which gives you a 40% discount on return train tickets all over Kyushu (on Limited Express Trains) on the weekends and Fridays. There are regular trains running all over Kyushu.

JR Kyushu also market a Kyushu Rail Pass which can only be bought overseas. The cost is 15,000 Yen for a 5 day pass and 20,000 Yen for a 7 day pass. It is only valid for local and limited express trains in Kyushu and not JR buses or the Shinkansen that runs from Fukuoka.

Getting TO/AROUND: The Shinkansen is by far the most convenient way to travel around Japan. Unfortunately it isn't very cheap! Luckily there is a Japan JR Rail Pass available to foreign travellers. See the JR East website for details:

It must be bought abroad and stamped in Japan before you can use it. There are several options including one week (unlimited JR travel except for the super fast Nozomi service), two week, JR East and JR West passes. Check with your local travel agent for the best option or click on the link to see for yourself!

Here is a link to a very cool page that lets you see the routing between cities/stations/ports within Japan. It will tell you the route and includes the cost and time. http://www.jorudan.co.jp/english/norikae/.

I'll have to revisit your page, but like what I see so far. Would you recommend New Year's in Fukuoka?

I thought Fukuoka is a region of places. Btw In WorldWar II this was the place my uncle died in a japaneese concentrationcamp. Greetings from Holland.
