  • Japan has many hotels all over the country. For an excellent website to help locate a hotel where you'll be travelling check out the link below.

    If you will be a long term visitor to Japan and are looking for more tangible accomodation information then I suggest you take a look at this website: http://www.gaijinpot.com/e/housing.php

    Unique Qualities: HOTELS

    Hotels in Japan are usually 3 or 4 stars and cost between 8000 yen and 20,000 yen per night (average). There are places that are slightly cheaper (6000 yen for business hotels) and of course 5 star hotels that are more expensive. Discount packages are often offered by the various hotels (especially in large cities like Tokyo and Osaka) so it is worth looking at the hotel's website or a discount accomodation website like http://www.travelocity.com which I used to book a heavily discounted room in Tokyo over new year.

    RYOKAN

    Ryokan are Japanese style hotels. Ryokan are usually more expensive than hotels and are often found in resort areas. The rooms are tatami style with futons for sleeping. Package deals are often available including onsen bath and breakfast. A night here will usually start at around 10,000 yen.

    MINSHUKU

    Minshuku are small family hotels. They are quite cheap (3000-6000 yen per night) but can be difficult to find. I stayed at Minshuku mostly on Shikoku where I went to the local Tourist Information Centre at the train station and asked them to help me find cheap accomodation for the night. They would ring around and see what was available. Not all TIC's will do this for you, Shikoku was especially friendly!
    Minshuku are usually Japanese style rooms with a futon and often have a communal bath.

    NEW KOYO HOTEL * UENO
  • Tip Rating:
  • This hotel touts itself as the cheapest hotel in Tokyo and having done some research I think I can agree. They are located close to Ueno Station in the heart of Tokyo and are very reasonably priced. I haven't tried this hotel personally yet but next time I go to Tokyo I plan to check it out!

    Single A - Small Japanese style 2.500 Yen (pictured)
    Single B - Medium Japanese or Western style 2.700 Yen
    Double - Medium Japanese or Western style 4.800 Yen

    The prices for single rooms are per person. It is possible to sleep two in the rooms but you would have to pay per head. There is limited availability for the double rooms so it is advised to book ASAP. They accept reservations up to 3 months in advance.

    Unique Qualities: Both Japanese and Western style rooms are available. Email facilities and International calls possible. Kitchen and coin laundry available for the use of all guests. Japanese style bath and showers. Bicycle rental. No curfew!!

    TOKYO PRINCE HOTEL * MINATO-KU
  • Tip Rating:
  • Tokyo - Prince Hotel and Tokyo Tower
  • Prince Hotel and Tokyo
  • Tower
  • by kiwigal_1
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • This is one of the oldest hotels in Tokyo and offers a high standard of service at a moderate price. I stayed at the hotel for New Years evening for only 15,000 yen (Double Room). The normal rates for a double room are slightly higher but if you book early (they offer an internet booking service that details any special deals available) you are likely to be able to get a room much cheaper.

    Single= 18,000 Yen
    Double= 12,000-26,000 Yen
    Twin= 12,000-26,000 Yen
    Triple= 30,000 Yen

    Unique Qualities: Located right next to Tokyo Tower. Excellent views of the tower! Centrally located close to shopping and nightlife areas. Easily accessible by train or taxi.
