Vicuña

About 60 kms from La Serena up the Elqui valley near the top part of the Elqui River is the town of Vicuña. Vicuña is the birthplace of Gabriela Mistral and is worth a stopover to see the Gabriela Mistral museum, a handicraft market and a couple of the older buildings in the plaza. This is also the place where the tours depart in the evenings to go to the Mamalluca Observatory.

Pisco production

The town has an altitude of approximately 700m and is the focal point for agriculture, namely the production of the infamous Pisco alcohol used to make Pisco Sours. Fruit, cereals, wine and other crops are also grown in the region.

Honeymoon

This trip to Valle del Elqui was part of Christian and my honeymoon. We had my parents over from NZ for the trip and so it also doubled as a site-seeing trip for them. I have no regrets at all about taking this trip. It was a beautiful area and there was plenty to keep us all entertained for the 4 days we were in the Elqui Valley.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Good stopover on the way to Pisco Elqui
  • Cons:The town is small and dusty. For longer stays book accommodation in Pisco Elqui
