United Kingdom Transportation

Getting TO/AROUND: A great way to travel from the airports into London and around London is with a Travelcard with unlimited travel on London's Buses, Underground Trains, Overground Trains, Docklands Light Rail and Tramlink, for the dates and duration you require.

    Restrictions:
The day Travelcard (off-peak) can only be used after 9:30am Monday-Fridays (from 00:01 Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays) on the day of validity and for any journey that starts before 04.30 on the following day.Multi-day travelcards incur no restrictions and are valid for use on consecutive calendar days.

    Access to Airports
The only airport accessible with your Travelcard is Heathrow. If you are flying into Heathrow you will be able to use your Travelcard straight away on the Underground. You will be in central London with no hassle before you know it. For more complete information and prices use the website listed below.

Gatwick, Stansted and Luton airports are outside of Zone 6, you will be required to pay some or all of your journey into central London, depending on which service you use.

Express trains operate from Gatwick and Stansted Airports. For further information on timetables and ticketing, check websites www.gatwickexpress.co.uk & www.stanstedexpress.co.uk.

    Transportation: The Tube
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Other
Getting TO/AROUND: The Tube in London is an old system and much of the network was designed and built over 100 years ago. This makes refurbishment and repair to modern standards slow and difficult. It creates congestion, overcrowding and breakdowns that cause delays. In the meantime, there are some tricks known to experienced Tube travellers which you can use to make your journey easier and faster. For example, don't travel during the rush-hour but within that period there are times when it is less crowded than others. Arriving at your local station ten minutes earlier or later than you usually do, might put you in that "down" time. It can make the difference between getting a seat or not.

Tube maps, more tube tips and information can be found on the website listed below.

    Transportation: Britrail Pass
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Train
Getting TO/AROUND: We purchased a Britarail Pass in the US before visiting the UK. It's defintely worth the money and not having to buy tickets for each leg of the journey saves considerable time. We found most UK trains comfortable and less stressful than driving on the "wrong" side of the road LOL

There are a plethora of Britrail pass types, senior passes, 4 - 30 days passes and specialty passes. Check the website below for all the different passes and prices.

    Transportation: Across the Irish Sea
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Ship/Boat
Getting TO/AROUND: We bought a ticket in London for the train to Fishguard and then Stena Lines across the Irish sea to Rosslare Harbor. The cost in 2003 is 43 English pounds for a one-way trip. This vessel also transports cars.

    CROSSING TIME:
    3 Hours 30 Minutes

For more info go to the Stena Lines website listed below.
