Three friends and I went to Cabo to RELAX in February 2002! And relax we did. You can either lay back and relax or party hardy in Cabo. When the cruise ships dump a crowd of sightseers, Cabo is teeming with activity. It's rowdy and has a real party atmosphere, but when you travel a couple of miles outside of town, the sun and surf lull you into the slow moving pace that says RELAX. We made the trip again in February 2004 and enjoyed it even more.
Cabo San Lucas, is named for the slender cape extending eastward on the tip of Baja, Mexico. The weather is comparable to Palm Springs, California - but with an ocean breeze. In the winter it's in the 70's f, but it does reach the 90's f in the summer. Once used a a provision stop for pirates, Cabo in the last fifteen years has evolved from a sleepy hideaway for recluse fishermen and yacht owners into Mexico's most popular resort destination. This is due largely to improved roads and air access, plus heavy investment by FONATUR (the government's agency in charge of new resort development) and the private sector. The west coast of the US was the first to discover this place in the sunshine, but flights out of Phoenix are bringing people from other parts of the country. |
| | Sunset over Cabo This year, 2004, we had an overcast day which left with the beautiful sunset seen in the picture.
There has been many changes in the Cabo area since 2002, they even have a Costco and there are rumors that WalMart is coming to town (oh no!) For those who aren't familair with Costco or WalMart , Costco is a large warehouse food store that sells in large quantities and WalMart sells everything from "soup to nuts" with lower than average prices. The locals have welcomed them as it has added to their economy, but it does take away from the true Mexican feel of the area. The locals have their own indoor mall now with a huge grocery store filled to the brim with Mexican brand foods and a wonderful bakery. These stores are located on the outskirts of Cabo and can be seen from the highway when driving in from the airport. |
| | The Tourist Corridor The map is showing the "tourist corridor" where the major hotels are located along the Sea of Cortez in proximity to Cabo and Los Cabo International Airport. |
