Currier and Ives Country

Peterborough
Peterborough is in the heart of the Monadnock Region. Many artists and writers live here and Peterborough is also said to have inspired Thornton Wilder's "Our Town". It's along route 101 which is a lovely drive and less than an hour from Manchester. As you drive west on route 101 from Peterborough you will come to the town of Keene, a college town that has the distinction of having the widest Main Street in the United States. It's also the home of the Cuddle Toys company.

This area is so picturesque it's referred to as Currier and Ives country
MacDowell - borrowed from their site

An Artist Colony

The MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire was founded in 1907 to provide a place where creative artists could find freedom to concentrate on their work. Writers, Composers, Visual Artists, Photographers, Printmakers, Filmmakers and Architects come to the Colony each year from all parts of the United States and abroad. They take advantage of uninterrupted time and seclusion in which to work and they enjoy the experience of living in a community of gifted artists.

thanks for the primer on Peterborough. We may be heading that way soon. Need to see the man who owns Brennan's Antiques. Wish I could find out more about the town and surroundings.

You live in the most beautiful state. I just love the area and I try and visit N.H. whenever possible. It's a very different world to New Zealand.
