I really thought we would just jump off the bus and take a quick picture of the Leaning Tower and leave, however, there is more in Pisa then the leaning tower. The duomo is a fine example of Romanesque architecture with it's tiered facade and beautiful bronze doors. The bapistry itself an awesome piece of architecture. We enjoyed a few hours here really studying these magnificent buildings.
Pisa lies at the mouth of the Arno River, between Genoa and Rome. It was an early leader in Italian trading activities in the western Mediterranean. Its chief trading rival was Genoa and they had a serious falling-out. All through the 13th century, the two cities engaged in a violent struggle for supremacy, a battle which Pisa lost in the 14th century.
It was during the time when Pisa enjoyed it's position and wealth that the Campo dei Miracoli (Field of Miracles) was built. |
