Sorrento the Song of Italy

Sorrento hugs the Bay of Naples and sits proudly on very steep hills. Only mountain goats can climb these steep hills, we humans must take a winding street that traverses a hill down to the beach and the marina where the boat to Capri is located. It was a disappointment when a storm deterred us from making the trip. We waited at the dock with our umbrellas wishing the storm away, but it didn’t happen. We rode back up the hill in our lumbering bus and spent the afternoon stuffing ourselves with the local fish and amenities, then topping it off with the drink of Sorrento, “Lemon Cello”, a very strong after dinner drink made from lemons and of course, alcohol.

Our trip to Capri was soon forgotten as we ate course after course of Italian delicacies and after this three-hour eating marathon it was a nap for some, for some of us a long walk, rain or no rain.

This postcard is taken from an advantage point that really shows the beauty of Sorrento.

Favorite Resort

Sorrento is a favorite of beach goers and boaters and is a good base for exploring Naples, Pompeii , Capri and the Amalfi Coast.

The trip down the coast to Sorrento is a little unsettling. I was on the waterside of the bus and at times I could only see the water in the Bay of Naples at least 100 feet below, the road just seemed to disappear beneath us. At times you can see houses below and wonder how they got there. Little villages cling to the cliffs with no visible streets. The houses are Mediterranean pastel colors - very colorful.

The lemons in the picture are called "Limoni di Pane". They are not supposed to be used to make lemon juice or "limoncello" but to be eaten. Sorrento is called "La Gentile" because during roman times there were the rich roman families (Gens) .

Sorrento is simply fascinating and those lemons are so huge. Limoncello is a delicious favourite and that recipe is great, thanks for sharing it.

Lovely page. What a pity you missed Capri, it was really nice. I felt the Amalfi Coast bus journey was scary enough in the sun - can't imagine what it would be like in rain
