Amboise was the first of the chateaux we visited. There were many surprises at this castle. Leonardo da Vinci visited here often and is buried in Saint-Hubert Chapel, a gothic chapel which is on the castle grounds. Amboise was first owned by Louis d'Amboise, and has seen 2000 years of history in the Loire Valley; Louis XI lived here, Charles VIII lived and died here, Francois I and Catherine de' Medici visited here often. This chateau is the setting of the Amboise Conspiracy of 1560, a Huguenot plot against Francois II which ended with 1,200 conspritors hanging from iron hooks suspended on the facade of the chateau. |
