Off The Beaten Path: Harlaxton University, near...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Harlaxton University, near Grantham, England.
This here is a picture I took of Harlaxton on my last trip back, in the fall of 2000. This picture really highlights its eerieness.
I lived in this beautiful manor home for a half a year in Fall of 1995. You have to call or write or e-mail to be allowed a tour, but even if you just drive to the local town (Harlaxton) and park, you can walk the grounds and get a fabulous look at a real life fairy tale 'castle'. As I said in my intro, the movie the Haunting (1999) was filmed here (at least the outside shots). When you get there you will see why a scary movie would be filmed here. It is eerie! Living there was even eerier! The web addresses most beneficial are:
    http://www.ueharlax.ac.uk/
    and
    http://www.harlaxton1.freeserve.co.uk/
But this should not be missed if you are on your way to York, Scotland, or points north from London. Harlaxton is right off the A1!!...(thanks...stevenlilly!)

  • To the left, a morning view of the mouth of the Cromarty Firth.
Go to Cromarty, in very north Scotland. You have to go north from Inverness. It is worth it. So beautiful, like a hidden jewel in the deepest cave mine. It is right on the bay leading out to the ocean. There are rocky shores and great seafood!! And very very good hiking!
Please visit http://www.cali.co.uk/HIGHEXP/Cromarty/index so you can get more information!

  • Tip Rating:
  • Go to the glorious city of Lincoln, England. To the left is the Cathedral. This cathedral is the nicest in all of England and Europe. It is very well maintained and just amazing. It stands high on the hill for all the land to see. It sort of shames its nearby neighbor, the York Minster, which itself is quite stunning!!!

  • Tip Rating:
  • This is me on a rock in the middle of a Loch somewhere between southern Scotland and the Highlands. This is one of my favorite pictures ever. Wherever you drive in Scotland, do me a favor and take at least a couple of B roads. They provide plenty of opportunity to find beautiful little places that humans rarely see. Lucky me. I got to see this one!!! :)

  • Tip Rating:
  • The Isle of Iona. To get here, you must go to Oban, take a car ferry to the Isle of Mull. Drive through the most lovely Isle of Mull to the west, and catch a passenger ferry to Iona. (You can't bring cars to Iona unless you live there.) Once there, you can walk anywhere, it is a pretty small island. I will describe this island more in depth soon, but I have more to put up!!! To the left is a cross from the famous Iona Abbey. For now, visit their web site:
