We are in the water, above, outside our hotel, in Ambergris Caye.
Belize is one of the most beautiful places on earth. I was there for three weeks in May 1996, taking a class on Cave Archaeology with Trent University in Canada. Three weeks there afforded me plenty of time to: 1) Learn an awful lot about Cave archaeology and the rigors that go into that sort of scholarship; 2) Take a trip to Guatemala for the weekend to Tikal and Flores; 3) See the capital at Belmopan; 4) Go to Belize City on my way to a weekend trip to the Cayes; 5) Explore the jungles of western Belize; and 6) Discover that a large number of Belizeans are transplanted Mennonites from the States and Canada...
This was the most exhilirating trip of my life. I love the Maya culture and wanted to learn more. I have never been challenged to work so hard physically on something in my life. The trek to the cave, after a very bumpy ten mile ride to the jungle, was a four mile hike in a river to the opening. After you made it to the opening, you had to turn on your headlamps and swim most of the way to the site. The site was pretty far in the cave...
Needless to say, we relaxed when we weren't working. And if that is your reason for vacationing in Belize, you will not be dissapointed. The Cayes are especially relaxing. The eastern part of Belize is Carribean. The water is warm and very blue. Mmmm.
The west will relax, also. You are in a jungle, and a lot of people don't speak English or Spanish. (If you trek out far enough!) Just relax and take in the sights. There are birds and rare flora. Muy bonita!!
Anyhow, more in my tips!
