The country of tulips and windmills had been on my mind for the past couple of years. All I ever heard about the Netherlands was just how lovely it was, how the people were lovely and the nightlife superb. So I gathered my money, my friend Lynn, and a Benelux Rail Pass and toured this country in November 2000. I chose well, I believe.
Amsterdam was the first place I decided to visit, and chose to visit on a SATURDAY night! It was everything I expected and more. I had not gone to party, because that is not really me, but I do enjoy watching other people drink, do drugs and make complete fools of themselves because of their choice of refreshment! The Red Light District does not dissapoint if you like to people watch this way! Sunday morning, we walked to Anne Frank's house, and it was everything you'd expect...moving, dark and very small. After the house, we took in the canals on one of the canal tours.
The next night was spent in Maastricht, chosen for what it has that the rest of the country is lacking, namely hills and forests. It was very picturesque and historic. Walking around the city centre on Monday morning was definitely a highlight of my trip.
I wish I could have spent more time here, but there are always good fares to Europe from America's east coast, so I expect I will make it back someday soon!
Above--here I am enjoying an invitation to become a flight attendent. You can see the real ad at the Schiphol airport...
