In this section, you may contribute to help others by posting a one sentence comment regarding an experience you had while in Hungary. tips@Budapest.com ---------- ----When taking a Taxi, keep your eye on the meter and watch for the numbers suddenly jumping/increasing. ----- Count your returned change, the 10K and 20K note is easily confused (by the merchants). Most often the local shops are cheaper then the international chain stores (Tesco, Auchan, Baumax, OBI). ------ While staying in a hostel, check your valuables at the youth hostel front desk. ------ Public transport tickets are only valid for a single ride, be careful with this on the underground (big fines) -------- Watch out, they charge to go to the Citadella, don't waste the effort to climb Gellert (cost you 6 Euros) ------ Money changers in the streets... are NOT reliable and are not your friends. -------- Be sure to keep receipts, without which you can't return stuff, and they only give you 24 hours even with. ----------- Only pay for tours and sightseeing at the time of departure. ---------- The nicest golf course... is Pannonia Golf Club, Check out the link on this Portal. 19 holes of heaven :))! ------- Panzios and Hostels are cool... many youth hostels and small hotels around, check it out if you're on a budget.. --------- Walk and save money... Budapest is not as big as it seems w/ lots of straight forward shortcuts. --------------- Public baths are clean but very pricey... be prepared to drop up to 8 euros just to walk in. ------ Buda Taxi Airport delivery cost is flat 3,990 HUF.

Use calling cards instead of straight dialing from hotels, hostels, panzios and bed & breakfasts. --------------- Get a 1-3 day discount card for the public transport and save money when you first arrive. --- Watch out for taxis lingering at the airport... the voulchers are sitting right at the exits. ----- Some hotels have own vehicles to give you free gifts ---------------- Regina rent a car has the best customer service in Budapest... gave me a free ride to the airport. -------------- Hotel transfers are sometimes free, ask for it... --------- Got pick pocketed on the number 6 tram ("villamos")... keep your valuables close.----------- Check out the "live band" pubs... awesome night life in Budapest. --------- Watch out for tourist traps like Vaci Utca (street)... side street stores are more reasonably priced. --------------- For the price of a fast food joint meal (Mc Donald's) you can get much better & more in little local restaurants. --------------- Get your film developed at home... Budapest is very expensive for this service. -------------- I played golf at the best place in Hungary..! Check out Pannonia Golf Club... It's the best found in Hungary! -------------- Budapest is the Paris of Eastern Europe, we had a fantastic time! ----- While in Budapest, check out the Old Man's Pub, great atmosphere! ------------- Stayed in a panzio near Erzsbet bridge, saw the Budapest fireworks from my room :-) ------- Budapest was truly a joy, the locals are friendly and helpful, they all speak English (it seemed to us) ------------------ Budapest, Hungary the land that time forgot... 1960's attitudes and vast corruption The Budapest Parade was wonderful, we'll be back next year! ------------ Stag Parties in Budapest is a guaranteed good time, Pub Crawl 'til sunrise, go to Budapest. Buda Taxi Airport delivery cost is flat 3,990 HUF.

Warnings Or Dangers: Dog Poo Plague in Budapest

The Dog Poo Plague is no laughing matter here in Budapest when you have according tothe Budapest Sun 400,000 dogs( I am at odds with the figures as different source articles state another figure???) doing a doo doo every day and a quite few tons of the stuff ends up on the pavements, streets, parks and childrens playgrounds of this fair city. I have been quite fortunate all things considered, I have stepped in my fair share, or even a couple of times relaxing in the parks sat in something. Apparently 15 children go blind every year in Hungary from getting the germs on their hands and touching their eyes.I will paste an article from a local website with some details. Do you realise there is 1 dog for every 5 people in Budapest!
Budapest Dogs in Shock as Anti-Poo Fears Become Reality Dogs and dog-owners throughout Budapest are reeling following a decision by District VIII to aggressively crack down on those who fail to clean up after their dogs. According to daily Népszabadság, the government of the perpetually poo-caked quarter of the Hungarian capital will begin imposing immediate fines of Ft 10,000 (€40.84) on anyone caught walking a dog without a pooper-scooper or similar device for collecting canine ca-ca, and three times that for those unable to pay on the spot. It is the first serious attempt since the change of political systems in Hungary to deal with the problem of dog doo, which in Budapest has reached cataclysmic problems, being home to an estimated 170,000 dogs producing 18 tons of dung each and every day. And just in case you think that's not so much, remember, we're talking 18 metric tons, which is one heaping load of crap, no matter how you divvy it up.

Warnings Or Dangers: Menacing Danube rises in Budapest

Menacing Danube rises in Budapest It flooded again this week (March 2006) so I thought an article from the BBC might enlighten those who might be interested.
Sunday, 18 August, 2002, 22:01 GMT 23:01 UK BBC NEWS n Hungary, the river Danube has broken record levels along 170 kilometres (110 miles) of its length and is expected to peak in Budapest in the early hours of Monday morning.
So far the city's defences continue to hold and the authorities are cautiously optimistic that the catastrophic flooding experienced elsewhere in the region will be avoided.
Thousands of soldiers and volunteers have been working frantically to reinforce the defences. About 2,000 people have been evacuated. Water levels on the River Elbe in Germany are finally receding in Saxony and its capital Dresden, but more people have been evacuated in towns downstream in neighbouring Saxony-Anhalt.
Mayor confident
Nervous townspeople in Budapest have been working around the clock to reinforce sandbag defences, and the BBC's Nick Thorpe says they are getting tired.
The flow of the Danube appeared to speed up on Sunday evening as the water reached a height of 8.49 meters (28.3 feet) , breaking the previous record of 8.45 meters (27.7 feet) set in 1965. Meteorologists said the river was likely to crest at 8.6 meters (28.7 feet) at dawn Monday - lower than previous predictions.

In 2004 Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Medgyessy returned from his holiday for an emergency session of the government, which pledged more money for flood defences.
But Budapest Mayor Gabor Demszky said his city would escape the devastation suffered by some German and Czech cities.
"Budapest will not be in the situation of Passau, Prague or Dresden," he told Reuters news agency.
"Fortunately our forefathers were wise enough to plan and build these banks in very good quality in the second half of the 19th century."
However, our Budapest correspondent says that once the river peaks, the danger will be of a different nature - not that the waters pour over the city's defences, but that they seep through or under them, undermining the efforts of the past week.

Warnings Or Dangers: Scams in Budapest against tourists

Scams
If there's one scam that has been elevated to a fine art in Hungary, it's that of the konzum lany (literally 'consumption girl'). An attractive young woman approaches a foreign man on ,. Váci utca in the Vth District, strikes up a conversation, brings him to a bar she 'just happens to know' and gets him to buy her a drink. The bill arrives with several zeroes tacked on the end, and the hapless foreigner is strong-armed into paying up. Several restaurants and bars that engaged in shameless price-gouging of tourists have been closed by the authorities, but the practice lingers. Always check menu prices before ordering, and be wary when instant female companionship presents itself on Vaci utca.( years ago I had to wait on Vaci while he went to some office, I had 20 mins to kill and when I was approached by 2 females, I being gullible but not totally brainless followed them to a cafe/bar. I ordered coffee and they ordered wine, they offered me some, I refused as it was in a fancy bottle. I thought they might slip me a mickey or something,I was lucky to leave the place with only paying 2,000 HUF for my coffee! There are other scams, see my Changing Money tips and Taxi tips. To register a complaint for a scam, contact the Bureau of Consumer Affairs (Fogyasztóvédelmi Főfelügyelőség), VIII. József krt. 6, tel. (+36-1) 459 4800, 459 4945. Open 08:00 - 18:00, Fri 09:00 - 14:00. Closed Sat, Sun. At the Tourinform office on Vigadó utca, V. Vigadó u. 6, tel. (+36-1) 438 8080, the service provides a conference line directly with the police, and they translate for you from English and German into Hungarian. And police are on duty to assist

Warnings Or Dangers: Changing Money
|
Tip Rating: |

Exchange offices do not usually charge commission, but rates can vary widely. In our experience the best rates are at banks and travel agencies . Additionally, 24-hour exchange machines offer convenience as well as good bank rates. Such machines can be found at II. Margit krt. 43-45, V. Károly krt. 20, V. áaci u. 40, VI. Andássy ut 49, and elsewhere. The worst rates are usually at Interchange and a few other exchange counters around V. Váci utca. Such exchange counters often post seemingly good rates that apply only if you change more than US$1000! To avoid falling for this misleading tactic, ask how many forints you'll get for US$1. Changing money on the black market is illegal and, in any case, doesn't yield much better rates. You will always find some Middle Eastern gentlemen standing by the Exchange offices offering better rates, most are reliable, but always count the money. But changing money is really becoming a thing of the past with ATM machines everywhere.
