Looking through the other tips I see a lot of places which are really touristy and the path is well beaten as a tourist location where you will just run into other tourists! When I hit a place for the first time and the weather is good, I love to find those places hidden away or unknown by the tourist guides! It`s so simple just to buy a good map of the city and then just dissapear of the tourist radar. I have a student coming in 10 mins so will write more when time allows. Budapest has 22 Districts and tourists will penetrate less than 1% in area of the city, so just use your imagination and jump on a bus, tram or local train and travel for 15 minutes and see where you end up! Get a MAV train timetable or look on the net at where the local transport will take you, then check out districts and places in GOOGLE. But then again some travelers are into buildings and not local people and customs. Me I like to go DARK, off the radar and penetrate into the woodwork of a place. For example about 8 years ago when I was married and living in Budapest downtown just off Kalvin Ter, I loved to choose locations a little further of and then find out how to get there, I went to the Obuda Sziget (island) instead of the Margit Island for relaxing sunny afternoons. Sometimes trips to Vac or Nagymaros for the day, crossing on the ferry over to Visegrad.. Take the Nostalgia train (Steam train from Nyugyati Station Summer weekends) Take the Local Train HEV out to Cspel Island and see the factories and the working mans drinking bars, go to the Chinese Market (take the No.9 bus ) to Josef Varos Kina Piac. Go to the shopping Mall Mamuth 1 stop by tram 4 or 6 from Moskva Ter and see the world of well to do Hungarians. Walk round some of the run down areas behind the SOTE hospital at Klinikat on the the blue line metro.

Budapest is the kind of place that if you just take a detour away from the regular touristy places and walkabout some of the streets in the central districts of Budapest round the area where I live and close, you will discover unusual shops, small cafes, 'Cukrazda' (ice cream and cake shops), working class 'Kocmas' (bars), restaurants, beautiful old buildings, wonderful small details and statues on buildings, parks, markets and a whole host of places that make up the life and soul of the city of Budapest.
Picture of the famous Jegbufe where one can get cakes made to order in 1 day or ready made a variety of cakes, in sizes 8 slices,12 and 16. First you have to ask what they have, ask for what you want and how much, then go to the cashier and pay, then return to the cake counter and give the reciept. This is the system widely used in lots of shops under communism. I know after living 5 years in Russia, 2 of those under communism.

Walking down Kossut Lajos Utca towards the Erzebet Hid (Elizabeth Bridge) on the right hand side of the road you can find many interesting facades and statues on the outsides of various buildings. When you get to Ferenciak Tere you have the Parizs Udvar (Paris Courtyard).

Also known as Hajógyári Sziget (shipyard Island). This oasis in the middle of the River Danube is a great alternative to Margit Island as long as you avoid the "Budapest Woodstock" in the beginning of August called Sziget Festival.
HOW TO GET THERE
The southern extent of Óbuda Island, the northern-most of the two islands in the River Danube in central Budapest. The bridge to the island is the extension to Mozaik St, while via public transport, take the suburban train (HÉV) five stops north from Batthyány tér to Filatorigát station and walk over the bridge.

More buildings on Kossut Lajos utca have wonder facades. Just look at the details that adorn some of the buildings. I heard yesterday morning some demonstators hijacked a bus and blockaded the Erzebeth Bridge. The bridge and the road were then closed. Riot police were sent in to clear the road and arrest the hijakers. See photo for the location.
