Budapest at night: Walking about Budapest late
  • Tip Rating:
  • Nightlife Spot: The Pest Side late at night

You can walk around the main people places if the weather is fine. Oktogon then to Ference Liszt Square, used to be hip 5 years ago now just tourists and pleb wanna be famous, look at me Hungarians. Stroll down Andrassy to Deak Ter, then swing left to Astoria. Either go straight down Muzeum Korut to Kalvin Ter then left up Raday utca or take a left on Rakoczi utca towards Blaha Ter. Even a stroll on the paralell streets Dob utca or Dohanyi utca (Jewish District Ex Ghetto) can give a buzz or a vibe of how the city used to look like. Castros down Raday is great with a good Yugoslav Cuisine.Manager is Dutch Kiss Erkel also a nice small bar just off Raday on Erkel utca, shows impromtu movies/Manga goldern oldy Hungarian Commy stuff. Sometimes an old guy comes in to spin some Smooth Jazz or world music.

Kafe Katapult: Kafe Katapult and the bongo bongo!

  • Bongo Night at Kafe Katapult
  • by budapest8 , 1 more photos

  • Nightlife Spot: Kafe Katapult

    Kafe Katapult

This is one of my local watering holes, usually open from mid day until 11 pm

or much later, all depends on the crowd inside and whos working in the bar.

In the Summer nice to sit outside, but wintertime it`s cosey. Sometimes can be a bit loud

when the rasta bar guy is in a good mood. Some nights you can hear a duet singing

ballards, other nights maybe Spanish classic or Flamenco style.

There is a resident Bongo band which come in once a week, no fixed times. Very ad hoc!

Usually Wednesday, Thursday are the best nights, but then again, it`s just chance.

    Feszek Muveszklub etterem: Feszek Club
  • Tip Rating:
  • Nightlife Spot: Feszek Muveszklub etterem

Feszek pronouced FACE-SEK... is always a good place to get a feel
of Budapest nightlife. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays they usually have
live music downstairs that goes on until 4am or until they manage to throw
everyone out! I just love the bar upstairs, very kitch and reminds me of a grotty
version of the Moloko Bar in Clockwork Orange. I have sometimes been an only
guest and the barman was playing typical CHILL music like Cafe Del Mar.

Housed in the former Communist artists' club, there's a beer hall in the cellar,
two eating areas (one on the ground floor and one upstairs), a gallery/exhibition
area and a TV room-cum-students' union bar. The establishment was built in 1901
as a nunnery or convent and fun to sit in the beer garden on a warm summers night
and imagine the place teeming with nuns and reciting prayers.
I love the pictures in the entrance from the days when it was an artists club.
Still reminds me of my years spent in the CCCP with the old guy sitting in the
    reception watching over the place.

In warmer months the best spot is the large courtyard, which has pink decor and plants.
Inside, there is an imposing entrance, a wide high-ceilinged foyer and a sumptuous,
sweeping double-sided stairway that winds past enormous stained glass windows.

Set menus are available for HUF 1400 and include 'Hunter's Choice' offering homemade
pheasant soup, game croquettes, game stew in red wine and cottage cheese dumplings.
The 'Gourmet Menu' includes wild boar ragout and liver croquettes. Bean soup, goulash
and all the traditional favourites are available.

Open Hours: 12pm - 1am daily and the Club until later when a band is playing.

Szimpla Kert: Szimpla Kert ..The Simple Garden
  • Tip Rating:
  • Nightlife Spot: Szimpla Kert

Great people watching place which doubles as a bar and cinema. In a disused house with surrounding courtyards under cover of a simple roof and heating in the winter. Table football in one of the side rooms and lots of old tables and chairs and old comfy sofas if your lucky to sit on.
Very East Berlin feel(before the Wall came down) about the place. Well no border patrols.

Sark Bar is a nice little funky bar at the corner of Klauzál tér on Dob utca,
a 5 minute walk from Astoria. A large cellar downstairs where they
sometimes have live bands downstairs or a disco.
Sark' means 'pole' (as in North Pole) in Hungarian and 'sarok' means 'corner'.
Upstairs or ground floor when you come in done out with
old press photos one metre square of people from the '60's
from every part of the planet. Look more like Scotland Yard
Most Wanted or Missing Persons Dept.
The place is a popular haunt for Hungarian students
and Scandanavian Vetinarian and Medical students and the usual
    mix of various ex-pats.

Cha-Cha-Cha Underground Cafe: Cha-Cha-Cha the night away
  • Tip Rating:
  • Nightlife Spot: Cha-Cha-Cha Underground Cafe

I lived on Baross utca from 1994 to 2002 so was suprised and glad to
see a club opening up in my local metro station back in 2000.
Used to drop by on my way home after a partying or socialising,,
Anyone who has lived in BP for more than a year and goes out more
than once a month probably knows about Cha-Cha-Cha, the city's most
famous metro underpass bar/cafe. But there are still lots who don't know,
    or don't go. We like Cha-Cha-Cha - or Csa-csa-csa, as we've sometimes
seen it written - not just because of its groovy location and 60`s Hungarian pop
d?cor. It's good at everything it does, being (during the day and on weekdays)
a relaxing place for a cup of joe or a drink, and (sometimes on the weekends)
a throbbing disco as packed as a rush-hour Tokyo subway.

Marilyn Table Dance bar or Marilyn Notouch Bar: Adult entertainment for single males in Budapest

As in all former iron curtain countries when the
iron curtain fell and communism was banished,
    Gulyas Communism dissapeared to morph
into Gulyas Capitalism. Even if everthing looks
so western, the mindset in society still retains
many communist values. Casinos and girlie
bars have popped all over Budapest in the last
15 years. Prostitution was tolerated in my district
    up until 1998 where there was a `hooker zone` .
The Marylin has been around since I moved to Budapest
and paid only 2 visits in 10 years. Once on a stag party
with an American freind of mine. We ended up there after
the end of a pub crawl of some of our favourite watering holes.
We paid for a lap dance on stag which entailed him being
stripped down to his boxers by 2 skimply clad ladies in
the usual girlie bar atire. He was made to sit down on a chair on stage
and covered in shaving cream, and chocolate sauce.
A good end to our night and nothing lurid or OTT.
Some of the older members of the ex-pat community
say it`s one of the better places. They charge no entrance
and the beers cost 500 for a POHAR. But beware of other places
as they are real rip off joints.
For the real male vouyeur there are PEEP shows dotted around Pest.
