Jamaica has beautiful water, white sand beaches and some great scuba diving. If your idea of a vacation is to sit on a beach and drink then this is a good destination to visit. I was there for 10 days and was pretty much ready to leave after day 3.
My number one recommendation for those visiting Jamaica is to stay on an all exclusive resort. I did not and really regretted it. All inclusive resorts offer two advantages. First and foremost, all exclusive resort provides security and protection against the local rift raft. I was pretty much harassed by the local men the entire time… mostly with the sing-song, “Pretty lady, Pretty lady, ever have a black man, once you have a black man you’ll never have a white man, Pretty lady, Pretty lady”. I was also constantly barraged with requests to exchange money, buy ganga (pot) and get my hair braided. I was also followed constantly, I even had a guide we had hired earlier in the day “appear” in my hotel room!!!!!!!
My watch was also stolen from my hotel room while I was in the shower!!! Friends that I have talked to that stayed in all exclusive resorts had a much better experience. They also paid less for their trip than I did. I found dining out, horse back riding and day trips to be very overpriced in Jamaica. The best deal is the all inclusive resorts. |

Herkbert Wed Dec 6, 2006 02:30 UTC Pity that nothing has changed. It was the same way back in 1980 when we honeymooned there. | doreenellen Wed Sep 1, 2004 22:40 UTC I agree - we were harassed all the time and did not feel safe unless with a large group which is a pity as it was a beautiful country. |
