Me in Macua on Dec 20th 1999 Macau was a Portuguese colony from the 16th century until December 20th 1999.
I was in Macau the day it was turned back over to China and it was basically a non event.
Security was tight and the police suggested I leave the island before nightfall for my own safety.
China has promised that, under its "one country, two systems" formula, China's socialist economic system will not be practiced in Macau. |
| | A back street. I had been to Portugal shortly before coming to Macau and could really see the combination of the two cultures, especially in the architecture and the little stone streets. |
Chinese medicine shops are filled with unusual things. Shark fins, sea horses, rhino horns....they also still use the abacus and hand scales!
Everytime I asked what something was for I was told sexual potency! I'm not sure if it was just blind "luck?" or it's a Chinese obsession | | |
