Here I am at an open market in the "free economic zone" of South China. Food (in this case chickens) are sold alive or butchered on site as they are purchased. Freshness is really emphasized. Cages of various live animals are stacked up as you enter restaurants to show the freshness of the food. Yes the rumors are true I did see dogs, cats, foxes, ducks, geese, frogs, turtles…. in cages to be sold as food. Mystery meat has an entirely different meaning in China!
I always said I'd eat anything, well I met my match in China!! These are cooked one thousand year eggs sitting outside without refrigeration. No thank you!

I cannot tell you how many times just reading the English translation of the menu made me loose my appetite. Goodness they eat everything here!

When I visit most countries I pay a game that I call “Point and Eat” I go to an outdoor market or street vendors and buy various foods by pointing at them (since I have no idea what they are I can’t order it) , and eat my purchases. This is normally a great way to be introduced to the food the locals eat.

China is the only country that I’ve been to that I didn’t play that game.
On a day tour we stopped by a Chinese kindergarten for a show. Aren’t they cute?! In the cities only one child per couple is allowed. Since boys are preferred, women would often get ultrasounds and abort the girls. To help stop this process ultrasounds are currently illegal.

Extreme community pressure is placed on the women to keep the birth rate to one child per couple. Women normal have their tubes tied immediately after the birth of their child.
