It was in early May. I decided to get off the train London to Dover, and spend a few hours in Canterbury.
I came out of the train station and saw a mound. I asked the stationmaster which way to walk for the Cathedral. He was very nice but I didn't understand a word he said. He did point towards the mound.
When I got to the top, the sight of the Cathedral was stunning. I never forgot it, it was looming and calling. I ran all the way to it.
Inside, under the great vaults, there was a sort of musical hum, the atmosphere was forbidding or rather, reverential. The paving-stones went on forever like a street. They fascinated me as they were all rounded and shiny with the passage of time.
There was something engraved on the tile where I stood so I stepped back and read : "On this spot died St.Thomas Becket, killed by the King's soldiers." Very moving.
Later I walked in all the lanes of Canterbury, the land was all in bloom and smelled wonderful! On the square, I went into a butcher shop and bought pigs in a blanket. Delicious! There was an old bookshop too, where I bought "The poetical works of William Wordsworth" -- leather-bound but strangely, no publishing date mentioned anywhere in it. |

You bought a pig in a blanket in Canterbury butchers shop? Somehow I think you may have this a little wrong, but it is very funny :-) | craic Sun Jan 18, 2004 01:42 UTC So you heard the humming! | mtncorg Thu Jan 15, 2004 21:28 UTC Coming from the Coast and Dover, Canterbury was my first introduction to England too. A very elegant introduction. |
