It all happened by chance that I ended up in Yunnan, in the capital actually, Kunming. But from day one, I knew I had come to the right place.
Before I came to Kunming, I read a lot about China and often thought the experiences I read about could not be matched. I often thought I'd only travelled to Europe and could never know as much as all those travellers to China. Still, opportunity knocked and I answered. I lived in Kunming for 7 months and from day one, I knew I was living my own private Idaho. This was it! this will always be it for me...
I will go back to China and discover many places yet unknown. Nothing will ever mean as much to me as Kunming meant, and as Yunnan came to mean as I travelled across it over the few months I spent there.
In my heart of hearts, nothing can be more natural and Chinese than the Yunnan I saw. I long to be there again.
Smiling people, you're in my heart.
The pic is of a friendly woman at Twin Dragon Bridge near Jianshui. This is only a few hours by bus from Kunming and as for all other travel I did in Yunnan, no problem. Just get your act together and go. You'll always be glad you had this chance!

Oh, yes Yunnan... I also long to be there again, what a lovley and huge place, indeed :) The 'chinese' food I ate there was the best I've ever eaten in China.
Hi Lou, nice pics and tips for "out of the mainstream" China. I like "It aint me babe" too-just forgot to put it on my list!
wow...amazing colours in your photos!
I like your intro pic a lot!
I liked Yunnan a lot when I went last May. I loved the Northern part close to the Himalayas. Did not go in the South, though. Nice tips, Great intro photo!
I'd love to return and take a better look at Yunnan. Especially Sishuanbanna and the Mynamar border region. Jem
