The main commercial street in Panama City is above the tip of the boot formed in the Pacific Ocean by Casco Viejo and Las Bovedas. It's called Avenida Central.
That's where I saw the most local life and felt the strongest vibes. I recommend that you go during the day, when the markets and stores are opened and when people from the City all seem to be there for a stroll. I left Avenida Central after dark, around 7 p.m., and tourists were trickling in. Maybe in search of nightlife? Actually, I don't think this street offers much in terms of jazz bars or salsa dance halls.
After I left Panama, memories of the time I spent in the City started coming back to me in flashes. Often. I saw street scenes there that were unusual and quite odd, the sort of thing you notice absent-mindedly at first, and suddenly realise how funny it really is. Maybe it's the Caribbean person's marvelous expression of pride in his body, they way people there occupy their space, even in public, especially in public, in a most natural way. They seem to be what we'd call energumens, doing their thing without a care in the world. It's very amusing and in the long run, most endearing. I keep thinking of these characters and I hope to see them again.
This man with the Panama hat must be Mr. Undecided. He stopped suddenly and looked straight ahead for a while, then turned to face the other way and stare some more. He did this with great rigidity in his movements and a total poker face. After repeating the exercise three times, he continued on Avenida Central like someone who just received his orders from the inside...
