"Mesa (and Vaughn), New Mexico" Vaughn by rids

<p>Well, this place is not on the VT listing for New Mexico, and I know why. This gas station is the only thing there. But, Mesa does show up on maps. It is between Roswell and Vaughn. We decided not to take a chance on making it to Vaughn for gas, so we made a U-turn when we saw this gas station on the other side of the highway (285 North). We had a really good time talking with the owner, Joe. First thing he told us was that he was only going to be there one more week, because the gas station was sold. When he saw our car had a British Columbia license plate he said, I'm a stubble jumper! Of course, every Canadian will know that a stubble jumper is someone from Saskatchewan. The name came about because the province has a lot of wheat fields and the farmers have to jump over the stubble (I guess). Joe had 450 acres of land around Mesa and raised Texas Longhorn cattle. Land and cattle are also sold. He also has an antique store in Albuquerque, as you can see from the photo. After all this, Joe's favorite thing now is to teach Judaism (the first four books of the Old Testament to be exact) and Hebrew, to Jews in Albuquerque. There were books of Hebrew verse lying around among the aliens in the livingroom of the gas station. LOL
We sure enjoyed our stop in Mesa, and Joe's comment as we departed was, You guys really made my day. You too, Joe! (Joe is on left in photo; right is my husband, Robert)
