This page will not just be about Halifax, but will also include other areas in Nova Scotia, including Shelburne, which is where my older brother lives.
For hundreds, perhaps thousands of years, the native Mi'kmaqs fished and hunted the waters and lands of present day Nova Scotia. Soon after the 1497 exploration of North America by John Cabot, European fishermen sailed here, eager to fish the seemingly endless cod supply.
The French, in 1605, established their first permanent European settlement in what is now Canada. It was named Port Royal, and the surrounding area, Acadia. However, the British also wanted this land and in 1713, the Treaty of Utrecht gave them a strong foothold. They gave it their own name, Nova Scotia, Latin for "New Scotland."
The two countries fought for dominance. The British brought German and Swiss Protestants over to farm the land, and in 1755, ordered the deportation of 10 000 French Acadians. Their plight is emortalized by Longfellow in his poem Evangeline. Some of these Acadians made their way to Louisiana, where their descendants are known as "Cajuns."
The American Revolution forced those loyal to the British Crown to flee the New England states. These Loyalists came to Nova Scotia around the same time as thousands of Scots, who were expelled from their lands by the Highland Clearances.
Halifax was founded in 1749 by Edward Cornwallis to offset the French fortress Louisbourg. It was named in hounor of Lord Halifax.
More immigrants arrived, well over a million, with the age of steam. From all over the world immigrants have arrived through the Port of Halifax at Pier 21, the "Gateway to Canada." Many of them staying in Nova Scotia.
Today the cultural mosaic is made up of over 100 different ethnic groups.
Nova Scotia is a beautiful, friendly province with wonderful people. There are forested areas for hiking, clear waters for canoing, and gorgeous beaches for exploring. Many times you have these areas to yourself.
The first time I arrived in Nova Scotia was like a feeling of coming home. It was just so welcoming and I look forward to my next visit.
