I took the train from Blackpool to get to Manchester. Now everyone always tells me about problems with Britain's train system, I've been lucky enough never to have any trouble. I find them fairly frequent and mine have usually been on time. You'll arrive at one of Manchester's main train stations, Picadilly and Victoria.
You might also arrive in this city via Manchester International Airport. Actually a pretty good airport from what I saw (I picked up my rental car there) and it's linked to the train system.
Take the Metrolink (tram) system when visiting certain parts of the city. This is the stop at Salford Quays, handy for visiting the Lowry Centre. Make sure you buy a ticket, they do have inspectors on board at times who will check to see if you've got a ticket. There's a fine if you don't.
I also rented a car near the end of my week here. That made it a lot easier to get to the Peak District, even though I always make a wrong turning somewhere :-S Oh well, I always manage to find my destination eventually, usually via the scenic route ;-)
