Desert Wilderness

by diamondd - last update: Oct 23, 2000

When we hear the term <i>"National Park"</i>, most of us think of things like lush green fields, pristine lakes or majestic mountains. We conjure up images of Yellowstone or Denali. Death Valley has non of these features. It is over 3 million acres of desert wilderness. There are no waterfalls or ponds or trees and the only mountains are as nondescript as they come. Why would you want to go there?

I remember reading about death valley in school when I was a child. I had an interest in geography and the simple fact that Death Valley was the lowest elevation in the western hemisphere made it instantly appealing. I had imagined a big, lifeless hole in the ground roughly 282 feet deep. The name was pretty attractive too.
