All of my trips to the Bahamas were by sailboat so I cannot offer much information on accommodations. But there are no hostels or regular camping areas on most of the small islands. I did meet one guy who was kayaking through the island camping on deserted beaches but it is difficult and dangerous at sea because of the distances but safe when on land. The small island are generally very safe because there are usually less than 300 people and everyone including the police know ant troublemakers.
