The British Virgin Islands are best suited for sailing. Most charters begin in either St. Thomas or Tortola; ours began in the busy port of Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, overcrowded with cruise-ship tourists on bargain shopping frenzy. We joined the tourists at the end of our 2 week sail.
The area's well-protected waters, abundance of sheltered harbors, and short distances between islands will show off sailing's best side. This sheltered sea of 35 miles by 10 is divided by the Sir Francis Drake Channel.
