Sharrie's Shenzhen Showcase

by Sharrie - last update: Jan 7, 2003

SHENZHEN (SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONE) was my first intro to China, the ancient civilized country with a history of 5000 years. It was an unplanned trip in so far as preparation was concerned. I was in Hong Kong (on one of those regular trips I made in the early 90s) and met up with my aunt's sister-in-laws for lunch. They invited me to go along for a 1-night stay in Shenzhen. Well, I was getting bored of shopping & eating (what one usually does in HK), so I thought it'd be interesting to tag along since I've never been to China.

We took the train from Kowloon, Hong Kong heading north to Shenzhen. Oh boy, I had never seen so many people trying to cross the border! It was packed & not a fantastic experience. That's when I thought, ok, this is the most populated country in the world & it's beginning to sink in! Next, there were many armed guards standing at the border. Then I thought, ok, it's a communist country! These were my 2 most distinct impression when I was in Shenzhen border & Beijing airport. Hopefully, the situation has improved since then.
