What makes this ancient town endearing is the cherry blossoms in the setting of Kumamoto Castle. KUMAMOTO is a small town with mild climate. Dominating the city is the Kumamoto Castle, constructed under the orders of Kato Kiyomasa, a warrior who fought alongside the great Tokugawa Ieyasu. Kumamoto was once an important seat of power (1603 - 1868); Kumamoto Castle (one of the largest in Japan) dates from then (the Tokugawa shogunate period). Basically, we were just passing by this city on our Kyushu tour & enjoying an afternoon at the castle has turned out to be a delightful & memorable experience.
