GIFU is a city only 15 mins away from Nagoya by shinkansen while the Gifu Prefecture (central Honshu) is located north of Aichi & southwest of Nagano. It was once known as Mino & Hida.
To take a trip around Gifu is to indulge oneself to the customs & heritage of Japan. Nature is abundant in this prefecture. One can take a hike up the mountains & soak in hot spring therafter. In Shirakawa-go, gassho-zukuri houses can be observed. In Takayama, the famous Takayama festival is held twice a year on Apr. 14/15 & Oct. 9/10. It's deemed to be one of the 3 most beautiful festivals in Japan. Alternatively, for something more unique, treat yourself to an evening of Ukai - a traditional method (dating back to 1300 years ago) of catching fish by well-trained cormorant birds.
