NIKKO! One of Japan's most beautiful & charming city. I've only been here once unlike many other Japanese cities, but I believe I'll be back again. It's a city that'll cast a spell on you once you've seen it. Spring & Autumn are the best seasons to visit since the cherry blossoms & momiji will add new dimensions to the nature of Nikko. If you have yet been to Nikko, you have yet seen Japan!
Nikko is where the great shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616) (who built his capital at Edo (now Tokyo) & founded the dynasty that ruled Japan for 250 years) was enshrined as a god & gongen (incarnation of the Buddha) in the mausoleum built by his grandson Tokugawa Iemitsu. This gorgeous Momoyama-style shrine was built in 2 years & is one of the most beautiful shrine in Japan! |
