WHITE SANDS NATIONAL MONUMENT is the world's biggest gypsum sand dune: 275 sq. miles of champagne-powderlike sand which are so fine that one could have easily mistaken them for the ladies' translucent powder in a pressed form! Well, for most, sand is just sand. When Ann & I met for the first time in person, this is our first destination (aside from landing at El Paso & driving through Texas to New Mexico), so I reckon it's something special to behold. I've always been enchanted by sand dunes. Photos of those found in Namibia, Sahara & Egypt somehow hold an incredible draw to them. I'm captivated by their ever changing "characters" & strange "geometrical" patterns. Like a lady, each sand dune seems to have a personality of its own. One can easily get lost within its beauty. If possible, try to do a hike into the heart of the dune & perhaps you could touch that sense of infinity both within & without! When you do, hold that memory & make it a real moment; one that you'll always remember & treasure. It's eternity! |

roamer61 Sat Mar 4, 2006 16:14 UTC You can make a very big sand castle with all that sand eh? lol. Intersting none the less. | AlbuqRay Wed Jun 30, 2004 04:16 UTC Sharrie, I lived in Las Cruces for 21 years. White Sands National Monument was and is one of my favorite places. Thanks for sharing your experience. It brings back fond memories. BTW, the "sand" is water soluable gypsum and dissolves easily in the shower. | srb Wed Oct 9, 2002 18:30 UTC beautiful pics. | Davidp1952 Thu Jul 4, 2002 02:52 UTC You did a great job showing the white sands! |
