ALAMOGORDO - translated from Spanish means "fat Cottonwood". It was the trees that grow along the main road into town that gave it the name. Alamogordo is the closest town to White Sands National Monument & this was where we stayed for the night before proceeding to the park early next morning.
A quiet town with a small population (I've got no idea how many, but small nonetheless), surprisingly, it has many key sites. About 10 miles SW of the town is the Holloman Air Force Base. Guys, you'll be interested to know that the base is home to the Stealth F117A aircraft (though I'm not so sure if this means anything to anyone :P ). New Mexico Museum of Space History & an incredibly small Clyde W. Tombaugh IMAX Dome Theatre! It must be the smallest IMAX theatre in the world! & I've been to quite a few. Trust me, IT is small!!! Other museums in this small town are Toy Train Depot & Museum & Tularosa Basin Historical Museum. So, for a small town, it offers plenty! |
