GRANADA is one of the 3 main cities in ANDALUSIA. And, Andalusia is where the Moors lingered the longest & where everything Spanish (ie. bullfighters, flamenco, fiestas, cave houses, tapas & sherry) are in abundance. The centerpiece showcase of Granada is its Moorish royal palace, namely THE ALHAMBRA, built by the Nasrids.
Moorish architecture is famed for its arches such as Nasrid arch (found at the Alhambra), the Mudejar arch & Almohad arch (check them out at Reales Alcazares under my Sevilla page) & Caliphal arch (found at the Mezquita in Cordoba). The eleborate stucco work seen on the domes also typifies the Nasrid style of architecture. Calligraphy is ornamental here & typifies the Moorish style.
History of Moorish Architecture: 710-929 Pre-Caliphal Era (Mezquita-Cordoba) 929-1031 Caliphal Era 1091-1248 Almoravid & Almohad Era (La Giralda-Seville) 1238-1492 Nasrid Era (Alhambra was built around 1350) |
