Sharrie's Medan Quencher

by Sharrie - last update: Apr 1, 2003

MEDAN is my birthplace. It is a place where my childhood was the greatest - one which any child could ever wished for. It's where I was spoilt rotten & "wielded" a great deal of power even as a kid! Amazingly unbelievable! LOL... Naturally, I love it here :-D

Medan is not a touristy place though... it's where tourists only stay for a night or so before proceeding to Danau Toba (Lake Toba) for the more scenic landscapes. However, Medan, though not as big as Jakarta, is a major trading center in Indonesia. You probably wouldn't ever imagined the amount & size of business deals that are conducted within the small shophouses. Merchants from Medan are said to be very astute & it's well known that when dealing with the Medan people, never never ever take them for fools ;-) This is somewhat akin to dealing with the Shanghainese in China!

Having said that, Medan people are very friendly & it's only in Medan where you'll find Chinese speaking a chinese dialect, ie. Fujian. I think there probably are some Chinese-speaking Chinese in Surabaya as well. But in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, it's not easy to find Chinese-speaking Chinese. This is the Chinese-speaking capital of Indonesia.

Wo bu gan chi niu nao! Eating cow's brain sounds like a mad idea to me! Everything else looks delicious though, especially the desserts. All those Chinese folks in Medan make it a gourmet paradise. I'll take two Telong Belanda, terima kasih!
