I had a lasting impression of SEOUL; my first visit was when I was 10 years old with my parents & sis. What's so distinctive about this city? It was the first city I experienced what "wintery cold" means! The day we arrived was freezingly cold! It was in the winter & after a fantastic visit to Japan, Korea was something else. So, it took me years before I was willing to take a chance again. As for my parents & sis, they never went back!
My 2nd visit was more enjoyable since I decided to go in the Summer. I don't know... I guess first impression does last for quite some time. Somehow, my favorite country in North Asia remains Japan & that's one country that many will find it difficult to measure up to. Having said this, I had a wonderful time in Seoul that Summer :-)
Korea is kind of like a hybrid between China & Japan. One can differentiate China & Japan very distinctively; culture, outlooks, behavior & practices are very different between the 2 largest countries in North Asia. One look & I can tell them apart. As for Korea, I've often wonder... what motivates Korean?
By the way, the word Seoul is a Korean term meaning "capital city". Officially called Seoul since 1945, the city was formerly named Kyongsong in 1911 & Hangsong originally.
