My wife and I spent a week in the small ski-resort of Valfréjus, almost on the French-Italian border, on top of the well-known Fréjus-tunnel connecting Grenoble with Turin.
The picture shows de skiing area of Valfréjus. You can see that it is rather small. There are only 52 kilometer pistes, which are mostly rather easy, but in addition to that there are many possibilities to ski off-piste.

This is the view that you have from the last 50 meters of the ski-piste before you get back in the village. There are several nice pavement cafees at the end of the slopes, unfortunatly in Januari the sun has set behind the mountains at 15.00, so you can't sit there after the skiing.

The left part of this building is the hotel where we stayed, Auberge du Charmaix. The right part are the apartments called Le Grand Argentier.

From our hotel-room we had this view over the central square. In the midle you see a ice-skating ring. At night there were several ice-hockey contests, one was between pubs, with no skates on!

Another view from the hotel-room. On the right the apartments called Chavière, the opposite side is called le Thabor.

The snow-condition in this resort is very good, which is partly the result of the fact that most slopes face North. In Januari this means that parts of the pistes are in the shade. This picture is taken at 10.00 at the Plateau d'Arrondaz, where the main lift from the village arrives, and you can eat a basic meal, as well as drink something ofcourse (see also the Tourist Trap section!).

Two of the slopes are closed for the general public to keep the snow there in the best condition for races.

This picture is taken from the chair-lift called "Du Col" which will take me to the pass called Col d'Arrondaz, giving me access to the second part of the skiing area.
<IMG SRC="/p/.95961/v@4_a-24-5-7425.jpg" WIDTH=450 HEIGHT=310 alt="F10">
The second part of the skiing area has two long, easy runs through the mountains you see in this pictures.
<IMG SRC="/p/.95961/v@4_a-24-6-7643.jpg" WIDTH=450 HEIGHT=311 alt="F11">
The highest point in the area is called Punta Bagna, and can be reached with a small cabin-lift. As you can see this is a very good place to get some tann, even for people who do not ski, since you can take the lift back down again.
<IMG SRC="/p/.95961/v@4_a-24-7-7708.jpg" WIDTH=450 HEIGHT=313 alt="F12">
Because the temperature in the village was around the freezing point part of the snow melted, and froze again in the shade to form these great looking ice-fals.
<IMG SRC="/p/.95961/v@4_a-24-8-7930.jpg" WIDTH=450 HEIGHT=303 alt="F13">
One day there was a snow-storm in the skiing area, so the lifts did not run. We made a walk around the whole village, which took us 30 minutes! From the highest of the (2!) roads we had this view. The "box" in the center of the square is the starting point of the small-cabin lift.
<IMG SRC="/p/.95961/v@4_a-24-9-8221.jpg" WIDTH=450 HEIGHT=312 alt="F16">
This is the inside of the "station" of the cabin-lift. Six persons can have a seat, the skis find a place on the outside.
<IMG SRC="/p/.95961/v@4_a-24-10-8288.jpg" WIDTH=450 HEIGHT=314 alt="F17">
In front of the Hotel le Grand Vallon you see a lot of people with there lugage waiting for the bus to bring them back home.
<IMG SRC="/p/.95961/v@4_a-24-11-8495.jpg" WIDTH=450 HEIGHT=310 alt="F19">
Here you can see that there was a lot of off-piste skiing. In this area that is generaly now problem, as long as you observe the avalange warnings!
<IMG SRC="/p/.95961/v@4_a-24-13-8778.jpg" WIDTH=450 HEIGHT=317 alt="F21">
This small cabin must have been a very silent place in the past. Now it is located just 50 meters from the ski-pistes, and a cross-country track is passing by even closer!
<IMG SRC="/p/.95961/v@4_a-24-14-8870.jpg" WIDTH=284 HEIGHT=420 alt="F22">
The ski-piste called "la Crête" comes down from Punta Bagna to the Col d'Arrondaz.

At about 5 PM it's time for a drink! We used to get that in a bar called "le Bois Brulée" (the Burnt Forrest). Like al the native people the barman and his wife were very helpfull.

The last picture on my film I used for this picture of my skiing equipment. A little bit oldfashioned are my long ski's of 198 cm. (no carve ski's for me!) and my shoes with "schnallen" (I don't now the English word for it).
