"A Classic American Vista & Great Campground" Monument Valley State Park by AKtravelers

Monument Valley State Park Travel Guide: 358 reviews and 1,127 photos

The vista at Monument Valley is one of the most recognizable in the United States. This is mostly because the buttes were used as backdrops in several old westerns that were seen around the world. But it is certainly beautiful in its owns right. Stark red desert and deep blue sky meet in a jagged pattern on the horizon, with a few lonely buttes acting as sentinals in a vast space.

Worth a Quick Visit

Monument Valley may take a long time to get to, given its remote location straddling the Utah-Arizona border northeast of the Grand Canyon, but it doesn't take long to see. In fact, a half hour staring atthe buttes might be enough to please some people. However, we recommend the whole experience -- camping overnight and getting up for sunrise, then driving through the park. You will not be disappointed.

We loved Monument Valley. My husband is a Western's fan, and since has since films made here.

I'm glad to know we're not the only ones to get out at every stop along a scenic drive. Beautiful photos and great tips.
