Honolulu is where the action is in Hawaii. If you want to see a big name concert, big time art exhibit or just shop at standard American chain stores, Honolulu is where you go in Hawaii. Friends on the neighbor islands build their shopping lists looking forwar to that once-, twice-, or thrice- a year shopping trip to Honolulu. If Honolulu were on the mainland, it certainly would hae even more of these amenities, plus probably even have a major league sports team -- alas, it's isolation deprives it of some of the attractions of many American cities of its size, but not many.
Of course, Honolulu is also the destination for most of the tourists who come to the islands, and Waikiki is a world of its own. Because of the thriving tourist industry, Honolulu is home to some of the best hotels and best restaurants in the United States. Additionally, it is safer and cleaner than almost every American city of comparable size.
