Tourist Trap: The Beaches of Lima Lack Sand and Safety

  • If you've looked at a map and salivated at the prospect of spending some time on Lima's long beaches, think again. The water is dirty and the sand is, well, rocks. Baseball size rocks. In fact, the sound of the undertoe crackling as it pulls the rocks out to sea is lodged forever in my memory.
Furthermore, while the sunset over the Pacific can be pretty (on the rare evenings there is no fog), the beach after dark can be dangerous and crime-infested.
So, while the beach is interesting for people-watching, entertaining for the surfer buff an interesting for its sea-side cliffs, one should not make it a point to visit the shores of Lima.

it is hard to walk around that heat with pants. My best purchase was hiking pants that have zippers below the knee. Not the baggy kind, straight leg,you can fold the legs and put them in a pocket or backpack.

Interesting Lima page. It's allready some years ago that I visited this place, but I didn't find the time (yet) to build a page.
