When we returned to Aguas Calientes from Machu Picchu late on Friday evening, we walked past a few locals who seemed to stagger as if they had consumed a bit of brew. Following the line of weavers as we headed past the soccer field toward the Machu Picchu Pubelo Inn, we came upon a normally-empty square that was crowded with people. In the center, kids were roughhousing by the fountain, but around the edges seemed to be everyone in town, drinking beer or chicha. It was happy hour.
We saw people ducking in and out of the local grocery store, getting six packs of Cusqueno, the local brew. Two druinken guys asked us to join them, but we declined. Now I wish we had said yes and joined them for a beer. Maybe next time.

The local beverage of choice is chicha, which is brewed from fermented corn maize. Often, people brew it in their homes, then bring it to the public square happy hours they have on Friday night. That seems to be the case in Aguas Calientes.

Dress Code: It appears to be fashionable that women wear a hat, as shown in this photo. The weather is generally cool outdoors in Aguas Calientes, so an alpaca sweater would be appropriate.
